It is almost time to place a village compost order, as we have done in previous years.
For newcomers – we have in recent years been placing a bulk order for compost from Dalefoot Composts for the village. This is peat free compost which is made from sheep’s wool and bracken in the Lake District – please see their website here: https://www.dalefootcomposts.co.uk
This compost has proved very popular, and if we order in bulk then we get a substantial discount on the price. However, transport costs are obviously greater now, which means that the price per bag has gone up to around £5.40 delivered (30-litre bags)
I have always felt that the environmental cost of transporting compost across the country is a problem, so I have contacted a local company in Cannington which produces compost as a by-product of bio gas production. The product is RocketGro, which is made mainly from maize, wheat and rye. I have negotiated a price from them which is about half the price per litre of Dalefoot: £3.99 per 50 litre bag, delivered. See their website here: https://rocketgro.co.uk
The products are different in that some of the Dalefoot composts will feed plants for 2 years but the RocketGro only feeds for 6 months. However, both are peat free and soil association approved.
I think, personally, that I will order some Dalefoot as a known product but will try some RocketGro to test it out. Does anyone have any experience of RocketGro? Please let me know.
If anyone would like to order either, or both, of these composts then please email me with your order by Sunday 28th. I will submit the order the next day, as the current price is held until the end of August. The final price will depend on the number of bags ordered but will not be more than the above, and may even be a little less!

With best wishes,
