Roy Cheek: ‘Low Maintenance Gardens‘
Roy started his career in nursery and parks departments before moving into education, where he spent 21 years at Cannington creating a wide range of different gardens, described by one gardening author as ‘the pick of the educational gardens in the region, if not the country’. His dynamic lecturing style enthralled his students, amongst them a young Charlie Dimmock.
Roy has had an auspicious career, winning medals at Chelsea, judging floral trials for the RHS, advising on planning for the bicentennial glasshouses at Wisley, and providing consultancy for notable gardens such as Abbotsbury, Hestercombe and Beaulieu, amongst many other appointments.
Roy will be helping us plan our gardens with a view to minimising maintenance, which I suspect will be music to your ears! It is possible to grow a wide range of plants which are welcoming for butterflies, bees and grandchildren without having to spend hours staking and pruning. If you’d rather be draped over a deckchair than hauling a hosepipe, this is the talk for you!
Free admission for club members. Guests £3. All welcome.
