For those new to the village, Wootton Courtenay has, for a number of years, made a donation of Christmas presents for the families being supported by Home-Start West Somerset. This self-funding charity provides pre and post natal classes, toddler and reading groups, support for children with special needs, support groups for Dads new to parenting and volunteer help for families in need of support with parenting skills. Local councils no longer have the funds to provide this essential support.
This year, the charity has a heavy caseload of families struggling to cope with the stresses of parenthood and also facing the additional stresses of an economic recession. Our region is famous for its scenic beauty but, sadly, contains a high degree of rural poverty and limited economic prospects.
This year, Home-Start West Somerset will be holding a Christmas party and lunch for supported families on 14th December. So the last date for donations of presents will be earlier than usual – on Saturday 10th December.
The presents requested are for babies and children under five years of age, preferably wrapped and with a tag for age and gender. Soft toys, books and puzzles are always appreciated.
Our village’s generosity for this annual request for Christmas presents has always been amazing and is highly appreciated by the Home-Start West Somerset staff and volunteers and, of course, by those being supported. Thank you in advance for your kindness towards these families.
Please leave your presents with Santa’s little helper, Andy, at the Villagers’ Store.
