Marian Matthews has alerted us to a recent email scam, having received an email purporting to be from BT which says: ‘Bills ready for payment – Click the attachment to view in pdf’, which was sent from a fake address – memoore243@gmail.com. If you receive an email like this, don’t click on any links or attachments. This follows a spate of fake emails from the email address of Bill Smith, a former Wootton Courtenay resident, whose email account may have been hacked.
We have all received emails of this nature from time to time, and Marian’s experience highlights the frequency of hacking and phishing these days: please be on your guard when opening emails, and always check they are from a legitimate source. And if a fake email purports to be from, for instance, BT, you can inform BT that you have received a scam email, which may help them chase down the scammers.
