Rob Schmidt: Greencombe Gardens
Club members free. Guests £3 per person.

This month Rob Schmidt will be coming to give a talk in the Village Hall. Rob inherited Greencombe Gardens from his aunt, Joan Loraine, who spent over 50 years developing the woodland garden into a showpiece of international renown. Run entirely organically, the garden offers outstanding views over ancient fields onto Porlock Bay and the sea beyond.
Camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons and azaleas erupt in a blaze of colour in early May. Rob will tell us about Joan’s life and work, illustrated by a sequence of simply beautiful photos and videos he has taken of the garden over the years. All are welcome.
If you fancy a preview before the talk, Greencombe’s National Collection of Erythronium will be reaching a peak in the next couple of weeks. These dainty lily-like flowers, commonly known as dog’s tooth violets (so called because the shape of the bulb resembles dog’s teeth), carpet the woodland floor in huge pools of colour, their ‘pixie hats’ bobbing in the slightest breeze. It is well worth seeing.
