African American Spirituals – also known as Negro Spirituals or Slave Songs – were sung by enslaved people on the plantations in the Americas. During Brian Castle’s talk we will listen to Spirituals and hear how songs of slavery became songs of freedom. We will hear the stories behind the songs and how they came to be composed, and even sing some ourselves. We will also hear how they have influenced music over generations and continue to speak to us today. The Scottish Highlands and English rugby are also part of their story.
