There will be another service of sung Evensong at All Saints’ Church, Wootton Courtenay, on Sunday, 9th July at 6pm.
Last month, I told everyone that Evensong is usually sung in cathedrals and abbeys. I was lucky enough to be invited to Wells Cathedral at the end of June to hear Evensong sung by the cathedral choir there. It was amazing, but I still sneakily preferred Evensong in our own church, right here in the village and on our own doorsteps. A little old church where villagers like us have worshipped for hundreds of years.
For interest, here is how Wikipedia describes Evensong:
‘Evensong is a church service traditionally held near sunset focused on singing psalms and other biblical canticles. It is loosely based on the canonical hours of vespers and compline. Old English speakers translated the Latin word vesperasas æfensang, which became ‘evensong’ in modern English.’
So, to experience a step back in time and for a traditional end to a summer’s evening, please join us for Evensong at All Saints’ Church on Sunday, 9th July at 6pm. And for a drink afterwards – it’d be rude not to!
