Tree Planting at Kings Wood

Tree Planting Day- Saturday 27th January

We are committed to increasing tree cover on Exmoor to at least 17% by 2050. Organisations including the National Trust and individual local landowners are all helping in this effort. One of our own National Park new woodlands is Kingswood, a 4.5 hectare site in Simonsbath, named in celebration of the coronation of King Charles III. This site will be planted with 6000 trees, predominantly native species such as oak, Scots pine, lime and hazel and others which will be better adapted to possible future climate changes.

Winter is an ideal time for planting bare root trees. The trees will be dormant, so they don’t need to divert essential nutrients and water to maintaining leaves and flowers and can instead put all their energy into growing strong, resilient root systems.

Why not join us for a tree planting day on Saturday 27th January 2024 at Kings Wood, our new woodland on the edge of Simonsbath, Exmoor?

Named in celebration of the coronation of King Charles III, this 4.5 hectare site will be planted with 6000 trees this coming year – so it’s spades at the ready!

Meet at Ashcombe carpark, Simonsbath for 10:30am, from where we will walk (15 mins) to site along a section of the Two Moors Way, above the River Barle. Please note – we will be working on a sloping ground which will be uneven underfoot. Warm waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are essential (it is likely to be muddy), and please bring gloves. Tools provided, but if you have a spade please bring one with you. Last but not least, don’t forget to bring a packed lunch and warm drink.

Suitable for all the family. Booking essential. Dogs on leads allowed.
