Wootton Courtenay History

The interest in the illustrated talks on the History of Wootton Courtenay at the Village Hall on Tuesday 1st October reminded us that during – and despite – the Covid lockdown constraints, the village published the book whose front cover is depicted above, on the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Many of those at the talks on Monday were new to the village, and may wish to know of this collection of villagers’ memories of World War Two. A few of the 50 contributions, including the edited Village School Log Book, are about this village during that war – but enough to be illuminating. The remaining contributions, some of which shine new and fascinating light on the War, include one researched account of a villager who fought and died in WWII. Together they bring to life the atmosphere of the Home Front – its privations, courage, sense of family, of community and of purpose; a valuable and enthralling read.

Nearly 500 copies were sold, by the Villagers’ Stores. Yet some remain there for sale, and at the same price – £5, all of which will go to the Air Ambulance.
