‘Who can believe it? Words that brought an Empire to its knees’. In church every Sunday, Christians throughout the world affirm their faith in the words of a creed, which was agreed in Nicaea (modern Iznik) in north-west Turkey in AD 325. This is known as the Nicene Creed. This year, 2025, marks 1700 years since it was first compiled and has seen churches across the globe looking afresh at the creed, asking how and whether it still speaks to Christians today. In 325, it was regarded as a radical document that undermined and changed the mighty Roman Empire. Revisiting it 1700 years later, we will explore whether it remains a radical document in the ways it encourages believers to relate to God and the world.
On Thursday, 11th December, we shall be looking at the reasons early Christians felt the need for a creed. We shall also see how and why the Council of Nicaea came to be assembled. On Wednesday 17th December, we shall continue the story of Nicaea and consider the creed itself, asking what it said 1700 years ago and what it says today.
The meetings will be held in Skye’s Bar where there will be the usual refreshments plus seasonal cake. The bar will be open from 6.30pm and the meetings (where there will be plenty of discussion) will begin at 7pm. All are welcome.
