Sustainable Wootton Courtenay is a community group which aims to promote sustainable practices, biodiversity and combat climate change.
During the year we design and identify a number of projects to support and develop our aims and we enjoy a foray into Citizen Science. The local community has been very supportive and we feel we’ve made a difference and learned a great deal along the way.
We welcome new members, new ideas and support, so if you would like to join us or you’d like to pop along to one of our meetings, please message us using the form below and we’ll look forward to greeting you at our next meeting.
During 2024 we:
a) began a biodiversity survey of the Parish. With habitats ranging from gardens to pasture to hedgerow to woodland, our local area contains a rich variety of wild creatures and plants. Visit the Wootton Courtenay iNaturalist project to see how local residents are helping to record and map this wonderful diversity
b) involved the community in making and erecting bird, butterfly, ladybird, hedgehog and swift boxes
c) hosted a range of talks about insects, the sustainable economy and West Somerset Wildways
d) set up a moth trap and bug hunt
e) organised a clothing exchange
f) established an Energy Efficiency Group which compiled a village file of useful information about energy saving and modern domestic heating systems, organised meetings to share their experiences and contact details of those willing to invite interested people to their homes to view their energy saving modifications
g) arranged tree planting in the village
h) carried out a beach clean
i) attended the March for Clean Water in London
