An Illustrated Talk by Patrick Hoyte:
Life Below Stairs
Entrance free
Based on Patrick’s research into Dunster Castle, this lecture charts the decline in the status of servants, from the generally amicable cohabitation or shared household familiarity of the medieval period, through to the stifling social repression of the Victorian era and beyond. The talk also explores pay and conditions of service, right up to the present day.
