Saturday 13th July (next weekend)
After three months of intensive labour by a good number of villagers, to whom we are deeply indebted, we have now completed the renovations of the Village Room, formerly the Post Office and store rooms extending out into the conservatory and garden. The new facility will simply be called ‘Skye’s’, named after my lovely old friend and clever little shop-dog, Skye, who, in her short time here, made quite an impact on many people in Wootton Courtenay.
Skye’s will offer self-service coffee, tea and cakes during shop opening hours, operated on an honesty basis with payment at the till on the way out. The Post Office kindly supported this project by means of a £1,000 Delonghi bean-to-cup coffee machine. This allows me to subsidise drinks and offer sensibly priced beverages. Apparently the machine makes all coffee types and a willing volunteer to simplify (actually read!) and annotate the instructions would be appreciated. The coffee shop will be open to all villagers and passers-by alike.
We have incorporated a bar in Skye’s: she was quite partial to a drop of beer! This will be open initially on FRIDAY & SATURDAY evenings to villagers, their friends and families and invited guests only. It can be used for private events at other times. I have struck a deal with Exmoor Ales which allows us to carry their popular best-selling ale on draught. The usual range of wines, spirits and soft drinks will also be available. This is intended to be a social meeting point for the village giving a venue to meet, chat, laugh and discuss everything but the ‘B’ word! Again, prices will be subsidised slightly.
On Saturday of this week (13th July), we will be hosting an all-day BBQ selling hot dogs, commencing at midday. First drink at the new bar is free! Please do come along at any time throughout the afternoon to see the extraordinary transformation that has occurred behind the green curtain. Help to (wo)man the BBQ and bar would be appreciated. The bar will be open in the evening.
Although Skye herself couldn’t claim to always be, Skye’s will be dog-friendly!
If you find you have a surplus of garden furniture or wicker seats and coffee tables that are no longer required, they would be put to good use! Thank you.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at some point throughout Saturday’s celebration. It will be sunny!
