Many thanks to Andy, who has allowed a big Red Cross bucket to be sited in the village stores to raise money for the Bahamas disaster. This tragedy must be one of the worst in modern times. There are officially 2,500 people registered missing, some beneath the wreckage of their homes and others helplessly washed out to sea in the 20 foot-high tidal surge. The number may decrease, as some may have been among the comparatively small number who have been evacuated, but the death toll is still going to be appalling. I can’t get the thought of it out of my mind.
Our donations will be used by the British Red Cross, who are working so hard right now in the disaster zone. These islanders are among the poorest people in the world, and they are homeless. Please, if you can, give generously. The amount raised will be officially announced in the village hall.
