The Parish Council has been in discussions with the relevant managers who are overseeing the Somerset Highways road closure between Timberscombe and Knowle Lane on the A396, which will be in effect between 10th to 28th May.
They have promised us that suitable signs will be placed in and near the village for the duration of the diversion to improve road safety. We emphasised the fact that most local traffic will ignore the 22 mile official diversion and will take the shortcut through Wootton Courtenay instead, as happened last week. They have been made aware of this fact and have also been made aware of the dangerous situation we all faced last week with the increased traffic on our narrow lanes.
Any number of extra traffic signs will not deter some selfish drivers, so please take extra care on the roads to and from the village for the next two weeks.
On the positive side, I have been informed that the road closure will only operate on weekdays. Also, from Wednesday 12th May, there will be a traffic light system operating during the evening hours on the relevant stretch of the A396 until the work is finished.
