The Lives of Others

The Lives of Others, set in 1984 in East Germany tells the story of Gerd Wiesler an officer with the Stasi and a loyal German citizen. He attends a play written by a Mr Dreyman who Gerd believes needs to be monitored more closely – but as events unfold Gerd warms to Mr Dreyfus and starts to protect the playwright and his family by clandestine means. Eventually Gerd’s actions catch up with him and he finds himself doing menial tasks until the unbelievable happens.

The Lives of Others won an Oscar in 2007 for Best Foreign Film, and is a gripping historical drama.
