Issues of freedom and oppression are high on the world’s agenda today. The Spirituals are the songs of the enslaved people of the Americas. The talk will illustrate the story of how they came to be sung and the impact they had on the enslaved and on the plantation owners. It will also highlight the enormous influence the Spirituals have on contemporary music. The talk will conclude with the story of the ‘Singing Revolution’ where songs played a significant role in Estonia’s liberation from the iron grip of the USSR. A key part of the talk will be listening to songs that liberate.
