Wootton Courtenay Flower and Produce Show

This was the first Show we have been able to hold since 2019 and there was a certain nervousness amongst the Committee as to how it would go after Covid and the extreme dry weather. However, we need not have worried as we had a wonderful turn out and a spectacular amount of brilliant produce in all sections. Well done everyone!

There was a wonderful display of vegetables, particularly the most magnificent cucumber which won Best In Show: nearly 18” long, weighing 3.5lbs and in perfect condition, grown by Ian Stephens. The judge said he had never seen anything like it! The air was filled with the scent of sweet peas (Best in Section for Rose Wilmoth), a Jubilee Cake crafted by Joanna Webber who won Best in Section, and a skilful Man Cake which earned Mike O’Keefe not only Best in Section, but the much coveted Apron!

The photographic section was of a very high standard and our Judges, Jamie and Lisa Waters (who also kindly took the all important photograph for the Free Press) had great difficulty in selecting winners. However, the Cup was won by Mark Oxtoby and the Peoples’ Choice by Mike Reed.

There was much more, and everyone did their best to fill the benches with very high quality produce of all kinds.

We all enjoyed a delicious tea with, again, mouthwatering cakes and the air was filled with the noise of people enjoying a lovely afternoon, a real Village event.

The Chairman thanked all those who had been instrumental in making the Show such a success and David Lowman then made a very good speech before presenting the Cups and prizes. Eddie Bishop then expertly conducted the auction of produce, before the Raffle draw rounded off an excellent afternoon.
