This year’s Flower & Produce Show last Tuesday was a resounding success. As Chairwoman of the Gardening Club, I’d like to extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed their time and effort to the Show. Particular thanks go to Ingrid Popplewell for organising and running the whole shebang; to all the Show committee members, who spent many hours preparing for the event; to Mark Oxtoby, who took the time to display the photography exhibits so beautifully; to Linda Stenner, Trish Matthews, Nicole Stewart and everyone who contributed cakes, for keeping the troops fed and watered; to Liz Reed and Helen Jones for buttonholing so many people to buy raffle tickets; to Veronica Clegg, who so elegantly presented the awards; to John Brady, whose huge voice and hilarious patter kept us all entertained at the auction; to Greta Gardner, Peter Clapham and my husband Bill, for taking some wonderful photographs on the day; and finally to the Judges and their able assistants, without whom there would be no winners! If I have missed anyone out, I apologise.
Yet again, I am astounded at the generosity and inspirational sense of community in our village. The Flower Show is effectively a huge group effort, and so many of you contribute in small but important ways. Above all, it was a really enjoyable afternoon spent in great company.
The proceeds from the Show allow the Gardening Club to host a series of speakers from September to June each year and make an annual donation to a local horticultural project. Guest members are welcome at our meetings.
