This Wednesday afternoon, Exmoor Natural History Society will be holding an illustrated talk by raptor expert Zoe Smith, entitled “The Return of the White Tailed Sea Eagle to England”.
In 2019, teams from the Forestry Commission and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation began releasing young white-tailed eagles on the Isle of Wight under licence from Natural England. The long-term aim was to establish an initial six to eight breeding pairs along the south coast of England. All the juvenile eagles were collected from wild nests in Scotland, under licence from NatureScot, and then translocated to the Isle of Wight and reared in special aviaries before being released.
The released birds were fitted with satellite tags to enable the team to follow their movements. Subsequent tracking has shown that Exmoor has become a white-tailed eagle hot spot!
Non-members welcome: £3 on the door.
