Every year, from early July to early September, libraries in the UK take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Children from new born to school leaver can take part: read (or be read) six books over the summer holidays, receive a sticker for each book read, and if the child reads six books they get a certificate and a medal!
This year, Porlock Community Library has set itself the challenge of signing up 100 children to take part in the challenge. We are well on the way, as there are already 91 young readers taking part but wouldn’t it be fabulous to hit that hundred – and maybe more? My great-niece, Eira, at a mere six months old, has been signed up – all that’s needed is a local address and a devoted grandparent (or great aunt!) to act as guarantor. Children not native to Somerset will get their own library card, which can be used for future visits. There will also be six Reading Challenge-related craft events at Porlock Library throughout the summer.
So, if you have an avid young reader in the family, why not bring them along to Porlock Community Library and sign ’em up for the Summer Reading Challenge? Some traditions are worth keeping alive.
