Thinking Allowed

Monday 14th September

A reminder that our next meeting is on Monday when the topic will be reflecting on ‘Challenged by AI, what makes us human?’ Some background notes can be found here.

This is a very hot topic at present – virtually every day there is something on the radio or TV about AI and concerns about how we, as human beings, can lose out. There are also many questions over how we can control its use and which bodies are best placed to do so. Forgotten in much of the debate are the benefits of AI in the realm of medicine, education and science. The plan is to concentrate, at our meeting, on what makes us human and enables us to flourish and which, on no account, can be lost. There are some ways that AI can help us flourish as human beings. The notes here are longer than usual, providing some background to this wide-ranging topic. You don’t need to have read the notes before you come, but they are there to be of help. They will not direct our conversation on Monday but will hopefully inform it.

As usual we meet at 7pm in the Villagers’ Stores. The bar will be open from 6.30pm. All are welcome. Poetry, humour and good conversation will be on tap. Everybody’s experience and reflections are welcome.
